I am an avid reader and needed something capable of holding all the books I've amassed over the last few years. But I didn't want those heavy-looking, closed-in book cases. So, I bought two of these - one for my bedroom and one for the basement. Assembly was easy and not painstakingly long. They seem to be capable of handling all the weight, while at the same time they add to the decor of the room. I love the darker color, also. To me, they are a wonderful investment. I am more than pleased with my purchase.

I bought one for my son's room in black and had NO PROBLEMS at all--easy to assemble and done in half an hour even without the slug helping me...The second I bought in espresso and that's when the trouble began. All the shelves were poorly finished, so I called Hayneedle and they were great--immediately had a replacement unit shipped out. The second unit had a better finish, though some of the slats were a lighter color--not enough to send the unit back and actually a better color for my dining room table. While putting it together, a couple of screws didn't line up a well and ended up stripping the grooves in the screws. I was finally able to screw them in with difficulty and the unit looks great. I left out the lower shelf so that the unit stands in the dining room/parlor with knickknacks on top, cookbooks on 2 shelves, and my recycling bins in the bottom shelf. The openness of the shelves make it light and airy and it is sturdy enough to do the job. You just have to be lucky with the unit that they send you.

      Unfortunately it has a chip right in the front where it is noticeable, but i didn't want to deal with sending it back. The box was not damaged, so it definitely happened before the box was sealed up.

                Opened box last night to put together and there were no instructions or hardware to put the thing together. Second time this has happened on a Hayneedle order. Hayneedle sending out free replacement.
